  PGDELT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
  Dear PGDELT applicants,
Please read this document carefully as it contains the instructions you will need for completing for application for the Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching (PGDELT) scholarship 2010.
  BACKGROUND & PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP
The Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching (PGDELT) programme has been offered by the National Institute of Education since 1985. The main aim of the programme is to provide an opportunity for English Language lecturers from universities in China with a chance to further your studies in Singapore. Each year, 35 scholarships are awarded: 30 to candidates from the Mainland and 5 to candidates from Hainan.
We are looking for candidates who have a strong interest in pursuing a course that will enable them to develop their English language teaching (ELT) skills and knowledge. It is therefore not intended as a language upgrading programme. We believe in accepting only those who have the potential to benefit from the programme and we have therefore set certain requirements that candidates have to fulfil.
  Academic Requirements:
2 writing samples in English (published or unpublished): In order to assess the quality of your writing, we need you to submit two samples. These should be good examples of the professional work that you do. For example, you can either send us a published article written in an area related to your research area e.g. language teaching methodology OR if you have not yet published any research. Please remember to date your writing samples to give us an indication of how long ago they were written (if they have not been published). 2 referee reports in English of which 1 MUST be able to comment on your academic ability and where possible, to state courses you have read or taught in the past that have relevance for your PGDELT programme. Referees must sign across the sealed flap of the envelope. 1 sample of teaching materials in English: containing a lesson plan developed you have developed, teaching materials developed for this lesson and a 300-word explanation of how the materials are to be used for that lesson. State also when the lesson was conducted and the educational level of the students it is meant to address e.g. if it is for college students, give their year of study.
  Aptitude/ Attitude:
Studying in a foreign country can be stressful and therefore, apart from the academic criteria laid out in the section above, we are also looking for candidates who possess positive attitudes and who are able to adapt to new academic and cultural demands of studying in Singapore.  Since the PGDELT is a Singapore government scholarship scheme, female candidates who are admitted cannot be pregnant during the period of their entire course of study. Selection Process:
Your completed application form and accompanying documents should be sent to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) in Beijing NOT to Singapore. CSC will send the application form and accompanying documents of short-listed candidates to NIE/NTU. Selection will be made by a team of specialists in the field of English Language Teaching according to your submissions: academic referee reports, your writing samples and your sample teaching materials.
Please do not correspond directly with any personnel at NIE/NTU during the entire application process but express all your queries to the CSC in Beijing who will communicate with NIE/NTU on your behalf.
Final Checklist of Documents to be Submitted (please check for your own reference):
